What They Do

Accounting

Accountants are individuals that perform accounting tasks for both individuals and companies. The material that accountants handle depends of the size of the company and the accountant's specialization, but generally includes financial records, taxes and financial reports.

In small firms, an accountant may be responsible for keeping all financial records, such as Payroll information, accounts payable, accounts receivable, retail sales, and information regarding investments held by the company. These accounts are kept organised in ledgers, which are used to assess the financial health of a company. Ledgers are always up to date and are normally used by managers and high ranked members of a company when making major business decisions.

In most cases accountants choose to specialize in a specific field, such as audits, book keeping or taxes, some accountants dealing with smaller companies will acquire a wide range of skills to better serve their clients.
